hose clubs that do not qualify can participate in the European Challenge Cup. The 2008-2009 Heineken Cup is the fourteenth edition and started in October 2008 and will end in May 2009 at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

There are many different kinds of rugby jerseys. The colors, styles and sizes are from every area that is covered by the rugby sport and perhaps a little beyond. The Ireland range includes the Canterbury Ireland Home Jersey in green and white, the Canterbury Ireland training Jersey in blue, navy and white as well as the Canterbury Ireland Training Rugby Jersey in navy and green. These jerseys are available in adult and children sizes as well. The Munster Range products are available in kids jerseys, jackets, hoodies, t-shirts, tracksuits, shorts, caps and scarves and flags. The red Munster Home Jersey and navy Munster away Jersey can both be great additional to your jersey collection.

The Six Nations Range Canterbury 6 Nations short sleeve navy jersey is quite a smart look and is also available in both the adult and children sizes. The London/Irish Range, Glasgow Range, Gloucester Range, Knights Range, Newcastle Falcons Range, Ospreys Range, All Blacks Range, France Range, Ulster Range, Leister Range, Connacht Range, Lions Range, Scotland Range, South Africa Range and Canterbury Range are all a part of the rugby jerseys that are available for purchase. Many rugby jerseys are discounted deeply and can be ordered in a variety of sizes. Couples can have matching jerseys or a group of fans who wish to support their range can order a rugby jersey for every fan in the group. When it comes to similarities, there are very few but some do exist.

For the most part, no matter what range you wish to purchase a rugby jersey for, you can expect a certain level of quality and craftsmanship in the material and design. Additionally prices are very similar but can be different depending on the style. For example, some rugby jerseys are available with long sleeves. Many rugby jerseys have new designs that came out in 2008 or will be coming out in 2010. Most rugby jerseys are available in children sizes, making the possibility of having the entire family in your favorite range jerseys quite easy. There are 24 teams who participate in the Heineken Cup, which is also known as the European Rugby Cup. This annual rugby union competition is represented by the nations of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

The Heineken Cup is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the sport of rugby. France and England can enter six teams. Ireland and Wales can enter 3 teams. Scotland and Italy can enter 2 teams. The Heineken Cup originated in 1995 when the existing Five Nations Committee created an initiative that included all of the current countries as well as Romania. Romania has not since participated in the competition. The Heineken Cup competition accepts clubs from the Magners League, Guinness Premiership, Super 10 and the Top 14. Not all clubs qualify for participation in the Heineken Cup. Those clubs that do not qualify can participate in the European Challenge Cup. The 2008-2009 Heineken Cup is the fourteenth edition and started in October 2008 and will end in May 2009 at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

The Kinsale Rugby Sevens (which is sponsored by drinks giant Heineken) is run by Kinsale Rugby Football Club at the Snugmore grounds which is located just outside the town of Kinsale in Cork. The event takes place over the May Bank Holiday Weekend, an d runs in 2009 from May 1st to the 3rd. It is estimated that at least sixty teams will arrive in Kinsale to take part in the most popular event of its stature in Europe.

In the past, Kinsale RFC has seen teams, players and spectators from all over Ireland, the UK, other EU nations, and sevens teams from the Pacific Islands taking part. Some of the world’s most skillful teams have participated in the past with distinction at this wonderful tournament of dynamic and intensely paced running rugby.

The Tournament originally started to raise funds for the construction of a pavilion and clubhouse for the rugby club, and it first acquired an international flavour in 1993 when renowned chef Keith Floyd, assembled a team called the “Keith Floyd Vikings” to play against an Anglo-Welsh side in a 7 a side match. Indeed, the tournament has seen celebrated Irish players such as Mick Galwey and Michael Bradley perform in the past, along with celebrated international players in the vein of Welsh legend Jonathan Davies, Scottish 1991 Grand Slam hero Gavin Hastings and 1995 South African Rugby World Cup winning captain Francois Pienaar.

Kinsale RFC is in existence for over 25 years and the Rugby Sevens is a thrilling testimony to the success of the sport in the area, which attracts large crowds and celebrated visitors from the rugby world - in the past Alan Gaffney former Munster Coach, and Australia 1991 hero Michael Lynagh have attended and thrilled the crowds with their tales from the rugby world!

The games take place on 5 pitches, and they will hold a total of 150 games! The Sevens rules apply to all games with 7 minutes per match half, and teams have at least 20 minutes rest between games. All matches are officiated by fully qualified referees. The Friday of the Tournament is generally a day for teams meeting each other, getting familiar with your surroundings, and getting that last bit of training under your belts! Games begin on Saturday morning at 10am sharp, and the event organisers have asked that all games kick off on time as there are over 150 matches to get through! Saturday sees the Howard Holdings Senior Men’s Cup kicking off along with the Ladies Saturday competition, followed by the knockout stages later in the afternoon. The Junior Men’s qualifiers also play throughout Saturday, leading into knockout competitions on Sunday. Sunday will see the finals for all tournaments played out, and matches are generally played up until 6pm, where after trophies and medal presentations take place, and a night on the town is organised!

Please note that all participants must be over 18 years of age and a member of a rugby club. There are full first aid services in place over the weekend in the event of any injuries.

How to get to Kinsale

Kinsale is located in the south coast of Ireland, and is located 18 miles from Cork City. Get onto the N71 (which is signposted for West Cork) and then at the Bandon Road roundabout get on the R607 for Kinsale.

Both teams are preparing in their best manners to get victory because this match will bring good consequences for team players and club.

Rugby fans are waiting for another important match on 1st March of 14 Super where a tough completion is going to be held between Cheetahs and Reds. While watching this match, you will find another rollercoaster ride of crucial fight for Currie Cup action on coming weekend. Red needs some tough fight to face Cheetah as they need to focus on getting victory after two unsuccessful defeats in South Africa. Last time, defeat of Stromers with 24-27 loss ensured Reds to participate in the match with the same points as the Cheetah currently had in league table. In this match, Stormers gave two bonus points to Reds that gives a swag-load of hope and confidence which they got from their trip to South Africa. Last time, Reds beat the Cheetah with lead of 23-13 in the match two years ago and got lead of 14-29 in the last year match. Fans of Reds are expecting same Rugby results from their rugby stars.

Currently Reds boast a good blend of experience and youth which put them in a challenging status for any team. Three players of Reds were dominated for the award of Australia rookie in 2008. Wing Peter Hynes who got this award, Berrick Barnes and James are the inspirational players that have made the position of the players quite strong over past two seasons of rugby union. With the participation of 20 years old Digby Ioane and Quade Cooper, it is clearly indicated that the bulk of Reds seemed outfit for 2009 matches.

Reds really possesses confidence and necessary firepower to give defeat to any team. They have some experienced players like Morgan Turinui, Hugh McMeniman, former Blues loose and Greg Holmes which are used as wild card in time of distress.

While Cheetah finally recorded their victory in 14 Super seasons after their loss from Reds with 20-14 in the last match. Cheetah had lost such matches with close margins many times in all eight matches, but they got some relief while defeating Bloemfontein that made them to taste the sweetness of victory. Cheetah remained victorious with 24-0 lead that put quite confidence and optimistic thinking for next the match. The details and live rugby scores of this match can be viewed online.

Cheetah faced bad consequences this season that make them hopeless and pessimistic. They need to maintain concentration in the match if they want to turn the table of Reds in the coming match. While Reds has still hopes to get dominance over Cheetah one more time, they include CJ van der Linde in the team who is considered as a player of top ranked. Anyhow nobody knows who will be the winner of the match on 1st March. Both teams are preparing in their best manners to get victory because this match will bring good consequences for team players and club. They also made some reliable changes to keep their teams in strong defensive mode.

Due to the huge demand, the game is unfortunately now sold out, so there will be a full house of 82,000 at Croke Park to witness a marvelous match.

Dublin has a famed hospitality, which makes a weekend break a pleasure, and if you throw in the spice of a top rugby match to the mix it raises the atmosphere stakes even higher!

The talented Irish rugby team, featuring the top Munster and Leinster players, will take on the cream of world rugby talent - the famous All Blacks of New Zealand and the Pumas of Argentina.

Having suffered a humiliating early exit in the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, followed by a hugely uninspiring Six Nations Tournament in the Spring of 2008, the Irish team will be hell bent on revenge in these eagerly awaited 2008 Autumn Internationals. Starting with the daunting prospect of facing the All Blacks of New Zealand on Saturday November 15th, then on Saturday 22nd November the Irish team goes head to head with Argentina, who cemented their position in their 2007 World Cup performance as one of the emerging nations in the Rugby World.

Ireland v New Zealand - Saturday 15th November 2008

Ireland, now coached by legendary Munster coach and Corkman, Declan Kidney, take on the mighty All Blacks at Croke Park…Kick Off is at 5.15pm. The impressive Croke Park arena welcomes the formidable opponents of New Zealand for the very first time. The All Blacks, whilst a hugely impressive outfit, are a team that is regarded as being perennial underachievers in world rugby, with just one World Cup in 1987 to show for all of their undoubted talent over the years.

The All Blacks, which perform the motivational “Haka” dance before the kick off, are one of the stalwarts of International Rugby and are currently rated 2nd in the World Rankings behind 2007 World champions South Africa. The current New Zealand team, coached by Graham Henry, boasts the talents of renowned kicker Dan Carter, backs Andrew Ellis, Conrad Smith and Richard Kahui, and forwards Greg Somerville, Andrew Hore, Tony Woodcock, and Brad Thorn, to name but a few.

Croke Park is undoubtedly an inspirational place to play, and here’s hoping the Irish team, now captained by Leinster maestro, and arguably the best centre in World Rugby, Brian O’Driscoll, can produce a welcome return to form in this fixture, but they will have their work cut out to come out on top against the New Zealand legends.

Due to the huge demand, the game is unfortunately now sold out, so there will be a full house of 82,000 at Croke Park to witness a marvelous match. If you are not lucky enough to have a ticket for this game, you can sample the atmosphere in many of the impressive pubs and hostelries close to Croke Park in Drumcondra. Quinn’s in Drumcondra is a great spot, as is Fagan’s on Drumcondra Road Lower. Hill 16 on Gardiner Street is the place to be on a match day and there’s always a great atmosphere Jury’s Croke Park hotel bar, just across from the impressive stadium.

Ireland v Argentina - Saturday 22nd November 2008

Ireland will play their last game of the 2008 rugby calendar against the Pumas of Argentina, in front of a home crowd at Croke Park on Saturday 22nd of November. Kick off is at 2.45pm. Ireland had a good recent record against Argentina going up to the World Cup in September 2007. Then the Pumas put paid to Ireland’s hopes of making the last eight in fashioning a memorable win for them in Paris against Ireland. It has to be said that Ireland’s key players like Brian O’Driscoll, David Wallace, Ronan O’Gara, Paul O’Connell, Gordon Darcy, Marcus Horan, and Neil Best did not perform to the best of their abilities on that infamous day for Irish rugby in the Parc de Princes, and the Irish team are sure to be itching for revenge in this game.

Argentina are an emerging nation in International Rugby, and despite their exile from the Six Nations or any major tournament, they have performed strongly in the last three World Cups, and indeed accounted for shocking the Ireland team in the group stages in both 1999 and 2007 tournaments with the skill and speed of their play. Last year, the Pumas also beat France, the hosts, in the Group Pool, and their emergence was intensified reaching the semi-finals for the first time, before losing to eventual winners the Springboks, from South Africa. They eventually finished third in the tournament, after beating France again, in the play off. As of Mid 2008, the Pumas have reached an impressive third position in the World Rugby rankings.

Captained by Felipe Contepomi, who lines out for Leinster, this will add some spice to the game as he is playing on virtual home soil. Other prominent names for the Pumas include in the back line, Ignacio Corleto, Augustin Pichot, Juan Martin Hernandez, and in the forward line the Lobbe brothers, Mario Ledesma and Patricio Albacete.

Now marshalled by joint coaches Santiago Phelan and Fabian Turnes, this will be a titanic struggle - make no mistake! Ireland striving for revenge from the disaster of 2007/08, and the Pumas seeking to consolidate their position as one of the strongest nations in World Rugby and demonstrate the quality of their pack.

Match tickets are still available for this game, but book quickly to avoid disappointment! You can book through the Irish Rugby Union website. Tickets cost 85.00 Euro plus a handling fee.

It is going to be the first time that this tournament is being staged in England and the kickoff will be on May the 18th at Edgeley Park in Stockport home of the Sale Sharks.

The presence of England, featuring so many world class players, provides both England and Sale Sharks with an excellent opportunity to reach a new audience of sports’.

The Exeter Chiefs will host the two games of Ireland A’s pool stages matches, against Canada on May the 19th and the New Zealand Maori on May the 29th. Tony Rowe the executive chief for the Exeter Chiefs said ‘We are equally delighted with the news that we are to host two further international matches during the Barclays Churchill Cup’.

The other three locations are Henley, Franklin’s Gardens which is home for the Northampton Saints and Twickenham; all the six teams will play on finals day at Twickenham on June the 2nd.

Terry Burwell, tournament director for the Barclays Churchill Cup, said "We are delighted to be able to offer so many rugby fans the chance to see top international teams in action in their region. Rugby fever will hopefully be building as we head towards the Rugby World Cup 2007 this September and the Barclays Churchill Cup offers sports fans a taster of some of the young hopefuls in contention for the World Cup itself’.

During the World Cup, the old city of kings will become the kingdom of rugby, hosting three of the most exciting confrontations preceding the final tournament with a quarter-final, the two semifinals and the great final we are all waiting for. The Stadium of France, home to the famous French team, will welcome the most skillful masters of the oval ball who will compete against each other to win the great trophy.

On September 7th 2007, the opening match of this World Cup edition will get you right at the heart of the event, with France and Argentina sharing the privilege of opening the competition in a match of great importance for both teams, decisive for their qualification in the quarter-finals. In a pool featuring also the Irish, undisputedly valuable players, there is no effort to be spared and both the French and the Argentinians will do their best on the green field. The French will have, of course, the advantage of playing at home, but, with the Argentinian pumas waiting to get their claws on them, Bernard Laporte is right to fear the dismissal of his team. With a match of such magnitude, it’s hard to imagine a better start for the greatest rugby event of the year.

England - South Africa, two giants in the history of rugby, promise to seduce the supporters with the competition that will be taking place on September 14th 2007 on a stadium crowded with with our British neighbors. In a pool with two teams that are obviously much better scored than the other contenders (les Etats-Unis, Samoa, Tonga), this confrontation already looks like a final avant la lettre and the English champions will have to roll up their sleeves to handle a team like the South African Springboks who dream of coming back on the Stadium of France on October 20th to play the final.

The third of the 2007 edition. The third of the 2007 edition of the Six Nations Tournament, the English have been dealing with some difficulties lately, but they are generally known for their capacity to right a compromised situation, while the South Africans are enjoying a rather ascendant phase with their latest victory at the Tri-Nations Championship, where they won over Australia. An impressive show of forces at St Denis that will certainly decide the winner of the first place in pool A.

The Stadium of France will house this highly significant third encounter, with France facing Ireland, on September 21st 2007, in a match played with a sense of revenge after the victory of the French on Irish soil (17-20) at the last Six Nations Tournament. At this 2007 edition, the French side is given thus the chance to also win the game in front of the same Irish team. A confrontation that will weight considerably in the final ranking, sending two of the protagonists of pool D to participate in the quarter-finals.

Once the pools played, the Stadium of France will open its gates for the final tournament, hosting a quarter-final, on October the 7th 2007, between the winner of pool D (France, Ireland, Argentina, Georgia and Namibia) and the runner-up of pool C (New Zealand, Scotland, Italy, Romania and Portugal). For the French team, playing the quarter final on their lucky field is a dream opportunity.

This challenge will be followed by the semifinals bringing together the world’s best four teams, that will compete against each other on October 13th and 14th on the famous field of Saint Denis. With only four places for numerous aspirants, it’s not that easy to guess who will be the 30 players to qualify for each of the two encounters, the ultimate confrontations on the oval planet.

October 20th 2007. This is the big day. A final the entire rugby world is anxiously waiting for, a challenge keeping everyone in suspense during the entire competition. Only the very best will be there and the French hope to fully enjoy this moment and support their national team against New Zealand who is seen as the main favorite of the tournament. Those who will be there fully deserve it . French rugby coach Bernard Laporte summarizes the tough law of this sport that places merit among its highest values.

There is only one question left unanswered: Who will be the King of the oval ball on the evening of October 20th 2007?

Rugby is the historical sport of football. The sport is played by certain classes in the UK. In the UK, for example, rugby is played by the middle and upper classes and is considered as an establishment sport. For other areas like Wales, however, they are mostly played by workers in small villages. Whatever the status of those who play rugby, it remains a fact that the sports have not been totally replaced by football and there are still plenty of rugby enthusiasts out there who still enjoy the game and have preserved the rules amidst the popularity of football.

One of the ways to show passion for the sport is to wear apparels associated with the game. Even if you are not a real player, or not an enthusiast for that matter, no one can stop you from wearing rugby apparels that suits your fashion statement. For one, you can wear rugby shirts if you want to look sporty even in casual days. If wearing rugby shirts in the mall or in picnics make you feel comfortable, then its all for your benefits. Besides, you might even look trendy and stylish with such apparel. Setting fashion aside, rugby shirts, and rugby boots are indeed real apparels that make you look like you have passion for the sports and make you even look sporty in your own way. Most importantly, these apparels are available for real rugby players to wear for the game. It goes to show that the sport is still well-known these days no matter how many enthusiasts or players there are as against the modern football.

Fortunately, rugby shirts and rugby boots are available in specialty stores. More so, they are available online. By simply browsing the net, you can readily have the rugby apparel that you want by simply ordering and following shipping term at your convenient time anywhere in UK.

In recent times we have seen the sporting greats come and go. In Tennis Tim Henman entered the scene and showed England that we did actually have real sportsmen, but then left the scene without achieving his goal of winning Wimbledon. In Rugby Union we saw Martin Johnson and Jonny Wilkinson lead England to win the Rugby World Cup in 2003, but from then on the England team just let us down again and again. Football saw the young David Beckham and the old Paul Gascoigne lead the English Football team to some near misses from 1996 to 2006 but now Beckham is stuck on 99 England caps and Gascoigne ended up in being sectioned. For every sport there have been high points, but unfortunately, there have been far more low points, and I intend to describe some of these disgraces.

First off is Football, the English sport of sports, ‘good old footy’, ’soccer’, ‘kick ball’ and it’s many other names. It’s a shame it hasn’t lived up to them. At school you worshiped our football heroes but as you got older you saw the sport for its true form… acting. I first started to notice it in the Euro and World Cup tournaments where a ball was kicked to a player waiting to take a corner and he acted (very badly) like it hit him in the head when it missed him completely. Footballers must start off as failed actors and move on from there. So football today is basically an acting career for acting reject, it’s almost as bad as wrestling. They should seriously start spread betting on which teams act the most during games or on the number of over dramatic dives.

On to Rugby, both Rugby League and Rugby Union, Rugby League is the less popular version that takes place mainly in the north of England. It is possibly the better ‘thought out’ version of Rugby and requires more physical fitness but they have made it an international sport, which in itself is fine if there were a reasonable number of teams that took the sport seriously. But there only seems to be three - just three countries in the whole world play the sport professionally, New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain, the latter of which always losing year after year, what is the point? Now Rugby Union has a far bigger international participation level but have you ever watched a game? Watching it just looks like it’s just a collection of dog piles most of the time followed by short lived runs which either involve running straight into the other teams players or scoring the odd try, WHY!? In Rugby League you can see the point in running straight into your opponent as you have to make some ground only having six tackles to do it but in Union, it’s just a way of losing the ball!

Now for the Olympics, an ancient event but one which has had some idiotic additions over the years. Firstly, ‘Beach Volleyball’ was added, which seems a little suspicious as there already was volleyball in the Olympics so why was ‘Beach volleyball’ added other that the fact that Olympics needed ’sexing up’ and athletic men and women in swimwear was the easiest way to do it.

Love Rugby? Wish you had more time to play, or even to watch your favourite players in action? It’s time to book your tickets for the Seven (7s) Rugby Festival at Bournemouth, UK. The Bournemouth Rugby tour brings together the best performing teams from the nation in a grand finale that surpasses any other Rugby Sevens event in the region.

Rugby Sevens is a growing phenomenon, and what began in early 1900s as a localized adaptation of the popular Rugby format, is now becoming one of the most acceptable ways to play this exciting game. In Rugby sevens speed is the key because everything is running against the clock. That’s why the Bournemouth Rugby tour has attracted so much attention in UK. Rugby fans looking for a thrilling time attended the Seven (7s) Rugby festival at Bournemouth and had such a fun time that they told everybody about the Bournemouth Rugby Tour.

The festival is held in May when the weather is suitable for a good, energetic game of Rugby. The teams who’ve performed well through the year meet to discover who will be the ultimate champion. Unlike a regular Rugby game, only seven players from the each time are allowed on the field and the game lasts from 7 to 10 minutes. This makes the Bournemouth Rugby tour an event chock-filled with quick delights. With one game happening after the other, you’ll never get a chance to settle down in the Seven (7s) Rugby festival.

The best thing about a Sevens tournament is that it doesn’t last very long. The Bournemouth Rugby Tour starts on a Friday and is done by Sunday. A tournament of regular Rugby matches would not end in a week. If you can’t make that kind of investment in Rugby anymore, it’s better to attend the Sevens (7s) Rugby Festival instead and have the same kind of Rugby fun in a lot less time.

The details of the Bournemouth Rugby tour are available on the Internet, and you can keep a tab on the teams that will be participating. Even the tickets to the Seven (7s) Rugby festival are available online and you can book them easily.

Another good thing about the Bournemouth Rugby Tour is that it will be alongside a Netball tournament and a music festival. This means that there’s ample opportunity for everyone in the family. If you are a Rugby fan, and your wife and children are not, you can still bring them along to participate in the music and Netball events while you take part in the Seven (7s) Rugby festival. This way everyone can have a great shared vacation.

Many Rugby fans believe that Sevens will be the dominating Rugby format in the years to come due to its instant results, and extra energy and that Seven (7s) Rugby festival will be held in more and more places. Others are afraid this will dilute the game of Rugby, the proponents say that it will contribute to keeping Rugby alive and healthy in the hearts of fans who are too busy with the pressures of job and life.

So if you’re one of these Rugby fans who wants to connect with the game, participate in the Bournemouth Rugby Tour for a complete weekend of nothing but pure Rugby.

Unlike other forms of football, rugby can be usefully viewed as a succession of prolonged physical engagements, either between individual players or between groups of players. Each of these engagements demands the exercise of substantial physical strength. While basic strength training should form the foundation for such engagements, there should also be a focus on developing explosive strength appropriate to the particular activity.

During the extended periods when players are physically contesting with their opposing counterparts they are continually subjected to loading substantially greater than their own body weight. And, because that added resistance is live, there is often the problem of overcoming not only inertia but also counter force triggered by an initiating movement

In modern rugby considerable attention is given to fitness and aerobic conditioning as well as basic weight training, but there is very limited focus on the development of activity-specific explosive strength. This is despite the fact that an ability to very rapidly generate force can yield a competitive advantage in each of the areas of physical engagement in rugby:

Scrum and maul. In the scrum or maul situation it is very difficult to shunt the opposing pack backward unless there is synchronised explosive activity. If a pack begins to move forward slowly or if just one or a couple of players attempt to initiate a shove, they are unlikely to be able to overcome the inertia of the opposing pack’s body mass. In addition, the attempted drive forward will almost certainly trigger an almost immediate counter-shove. On the other hand if a pack suddenly and explosively begins to drive forward as a synchronised, coordinated unit, they are likely to be able to generate momentum and place their opponents on the back foot.

The key elements are that each of the forwards possess basic strength and a capacity to rapidly generate force. However, it is essential that their movements be synchronized. If any of these elements of strength, explosiveness and synchronicity are lacking the attempt is likely to prove futile or even counterproductive.

Tackle. In a tackle situation there is great advantage in forcing the opponent, whether ball-carrier or tackler, back from the line of engagement. In order to do this effectively, the action has to be both powerful and virtually instantaneous.

In addition, ball-carriers with explosive leg drive are often able to brush past attempted tackles, while tacklers with similar attributes can forcefully secure the ball-carrier and take him to ground.

Ruck At the breakdown of play following a tackle the ability to push back or "clean out" opposing players from the ruck offers opportunities to win the contest for the ball or at least put the opposing team in a disadvantageous situation. The only effective way to win the breakdown contest is to apply very considerable force in an explosive manner.

Lineout. The outcome of the lineout contest is largely dependent on how high the jumper can ascend, but also on how rapidly he can reach that point. This requires not only a very good vertical leap by the jumper, but also the ability of his support players to forcefully elevate him. Both jumping and lifting require specific forms of explosive strength.

When forward packs are evenly matched in strength and technique, and defensive techniques are well-coordinated, a game of rugby can often become a war of attrition, with teams attempting to wear one another down over the course of the game. It is very difficult to maintain concentration and alertness throughout an 80-minute game, and a capacity for explosive action allows the exploitation of fatigue and inattention. It provides surprise and unpredictability, while limiting the possibility of appropriate reaction.

Strength training for rugby should always be grounded on a solid foundation of basic strength; but coaches who are seeking to gain a sustainable competitive edge would do well to incorporate a comprehensive program of activity-specific training for explosive strength.
