Kinsale Rugby Sevens With The Sea

10th June 2009

Kinsale Rugby Sevens With The Sea

The Kinsale Rugby Sevens (which is sponsored by drinks giant Heineken) is run by Kinsale Rugby Football Club at the Snugmore grounds which is located just outside the town of Kinsale in Cork. The event takes place over the May Bank Holiday Weekend, an d runs in 2009 from May 1st to the 3rd. It is estimated that at least sixty teams will arrive in Kinsale to take part in the most popular event of its stature in Europe.

In the past, Kinsale RFC has seen teams, players and spectators from all over Ireland, the UK, other EU nations, and sevens teams from the Pacific Islands taking part. Some of the world’s most skillful teams have participated in the past with distinction at this wonderful tournament of dynamic and intensely paced running rugby.

The Kinsale Rugby SevensThe Tournament originally started to raise funds for the construction of a pavilion and clubhouse for the rugby club, and it first acquired an international flavour in 1993 when renowned chef Keith Floyd, assembled a team called the “Keith Floyd Vikings” to play against an Anglo-Welsh side in a 7 a side match. Indeed, the tournament has seen celebrated Irish players such as Mick Galwey and Michael Bradley perform in the past, along with celebrated international players in the vein of Welsh legend Jonathan Davies, Scottish 1991 Grand Slam hero Gavin Hastings and 1995 South African Rugby World Cup winning captain Francois Pienaar.

Kinsale RFC is in existence for over 25 years and the Rugby Sevens is a thrilling testimony to the success of the sport in the area, which attracts large crowds and celebrated visitors from the rugby world - in the past Alan Gaffney former Munster Coach, and Australia 1991 hero Michael Lynagh have attended and thrilled the crowds with their tales from the rugby world!

The games take place on 5 pitches, and they will hold a total of 150 games! The Sevens rules apply to all games with 7 minutes per match half, and teams have at least 20 minutes rest between games. All matches are officiated by fully qualified referees. The Friday of the Tournament is generally a day for teams meeting each other, getting familiar with your surroundings, and getting that last bit of training under your belts! Games begin on Saturday morning at 10am sharp, and the event organisers have asked that all games kick off on time as there are over 150 matches to get through! Saturday sees the Howard Holdings Senior Men’s Cup kicking off along with the Ladies Saturday competition, followed by the knockout stages later in the afternoon. The Junior Men’s qualifiers also play throughout Saturday, leading into knockout competitions on Sunday. Sunday will see the finals for all tournaments played out, and matches are generally played up until 6pm, where after trophies and medal presentations take place, and a night on the town is organised!

Please note that all participants must be over 18 years of age and a member of a rugby club. There are full first aid services in place over the weekend in the event of any injuries.

Rugby Autumn Worlwide 2008 on Croke Park

Dublin has a famed hospitality, which makes a weekend break a pleasure, and if you throw in the spice of a top rugby match to the mix it raises the atmosphere stakes even higher!

The talented Irish rugby team, featuring the top Munster and Leinster players, will take on the cream of world rugby talent - the famous All Blacks of New Zealand and the Pumas of Argentina.

Having suffered a humiliating early exit in the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, followed by a hugely uninspiring Six Nations Tournament in the Spring of 2008, the Irish team will be hell bent on revenge in these eagerly awaited 2008 Autumn Internationals. Starting with the daunting prospect of facing the All Blacks of New Zealand on Saturday November 15th, then on Saturday 22nd November the Irish team goes head to head with Argentina, who cemented their position in their 2007 World Cup performance as one of the emerging nations in the Rugby World.

Ireland v New Zealand - Saturday 15th November 2008

Ireland, now coached by legendary Munster coach and Corkman, Declan Kidney, take on the mighty All Blacks at Croke Park…Kick Off is at 5.15pm. The impressive Croke Park arena welcomes the formidable opponents of New Zealand for the very first time. The All Blacks, whilst a hugely impressive outfit, are a team that is regarded as being perennial underachievers in world rugby, with just one World Cup in 1987 to show for all of their undoubted talent over the years.

The All Blacks, which perform the motivational “Haka” dance before the kick off, are one of the stalwarts of International Rugby and are currently rated 2nd in the World Rankings behind 2007 World champions South Africa. The current New Zealand team, coached by Graham Henry, boasts the talents of renowned kicker Dan Carter, backs Andrew Ellis, Conrad Smith and Richard Kahui, and forwards Greg Somerville, Andrew Hore, Tony Woodcock, and Brad Thorn, to name but a few.

Croke Park is undoubtedly an inspirational place to play, and here’s hoping the Irish team, now captained by Leinster maestro, and arguably the best centre in World Rugby, Brian O’Driscoll, can produce a welcome return to form in this fixture, but they will have their work cut out to come out on top against the New Zealand legends.

Due to the huge demand, the game is unfortunately now sold out, so there will be a full house of 82,000 at Croke Park to witness a marvelous match. If you are not lucky enough to have a ticket for this game, you can sample the atmosphere in many of the impressive pubs and hostelries close to Croke Park in Drumcondra. Quinn’s in Drumcondra is a great spot, as is Fagan’s on Drumcondra Road Lower. Hill 16 on Gardiner Street is the place to be on a match day and there’s always a great atmosphere Jury’s Croke Park hotel bar, just across from the impressive stadium.

Ireland v Argentina - Saturday 22nd November 2008

Ireland will play their last game of the 2008 rugby calendar against the Pumas of Argentina, in front of a home crowd at Croke Park on Saturday 22nd of November. Kick off is at 2.45pm. Ireland had a good recent record against Argentina going up to the World Cup in September 2007. Then the Pumas put paid to Ireland’s hopes of making the last eight in fashioning a memorable win for them in Paris against Ireland. It has to be said that Ireland’s key players like Brian O’Driscoll, David Wallace, Ronan O’Gara, Paul O’Connell, Gordon Darcy, Marcus Horan, and Neil Best did not perform to the best of their abilities on that infamous day for Irish rugby in the Parc de Princes, and the Irish team are sure to be itching for revenge in this game.

Argentina are an emerging nation in International Rugby, and despite their exile from the Six Nations or any major tournament, they have performed strongly in the last three World Cups, and indeed accounted for shocking the Ireland team in the group stages in both 1999 and 2007 tournaments with the skill and speed of their play. Last year, the Pumas also beat France, the hosts, in the Group Pool, and their emergence was intensified reaching the semi-finals for the first time, before losing to eventual winners the Springboks, from South Africa. They eventually finished third in the tournament, after beating France again, in the play off. As of Mid 2008, the Pumas have reached an impressive third position in the World Rugby rankings.

Captained by Felipe Contepomi, who lines out for Leinster, this will add some spice to the game as he is playing on virtual home soil. Other prominent names for the Pumas include in the back line, Ignacio Corleto, Augustin Pichot, Juan Martin Hernandez, and in the forward line the Lobbe brothers, Mario Ledesma and Patricio Albacete.

Now marshalled by joint coaches Santiago Phelan and Fabian Turnes, this will be a titanic struggle - make no mistake! Ireland striving for revenge from the disaster of 2007/08, and the Pumas seeking to consolidate their position as one of the strongest nations in World Rugby and demonstrate the quality of their pack.

Match tickets are still available for this game, but book quickly to avoid disappointment! You can book through the Irish Rugby Union website. Tickets cost 85.00 Euro plus a handling fee.

England Coach: Brian Ashton

Brian AshtonEven though Ashton got a lot of critics after taking 0 - 36 against South Africa, but the situation changed dramatically after the victories against France and Australia, and England unexpectedly run in to the World Cup, this shows clearly that there was a good job done by the coach.

Ashton had been working for a one year contract after he was promoted to be the head coach in December 2006 when Andy Robinson resigned; because of the results on last games the sixty one year old coach was rewarded with a new contract by the English Rugby Football Union chief Frances Baron to stay as the squad’s leader saying ‘Brian has clearly done a great job and I’m sure they will be thrashing it out very quickly’. Between this decisions it was mentioned the idea of hiring a manager to work next to Ashton.

It is not known how long this new contract will be for, Baron said ‘We won’t talk about these things until the World Cup is over’, though mass media suggested it could be until the next World Cup that will take place in New Zeland in 2011.

For the moment the main issue is next Sunday’s match… a very good performance is expected.

The Entire Black Rugby Shirt

All Black Rugby shirtThe recent couple of years have seen a huge player drain from countries such us New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. With England and France rugby clubs offering big money contracts countries are struggling to hold onto their players. In the past before the professional era it meant everything to wear the All Blacks Rugby shirt however now in the professional era players are looking to the bank and thinking of their future after their playing days are over.

The French teams and scouts have come under a lot of criticism for offering huge contracts with people within the industry saying they are completely out of control. Many experts believe if it continues they will undermine the international competition as the current rules with many unions state that players are not eligible if they play for foreign clubs. Due to the small population of countries such as New Zealand and Australia they struggle to get large crowds and thus big sponsorship deals.

So who will not be playing in the Australia Rugby shirt and All Black Rugby shirt next year? Well we already now that Carl Hayman, Bryony Kelleher and Aaron Mauger are overseas and there is talk of another 4 or 5 big name players considering the move. Australia will be losing Chris Latham for a reported 900,000 three year deal with Worcester who has also signed Rico Gear and Sam Tuitupou some of New Zealand best talent.

All Black Rugby shirtSo what can be done by the smaller rugby unions? Well we think the answer is not much! The budgets are generally already thin and with the NZRU hosting the world cup in three more years they are already under a lot of pressure. They will be crossing their fingers that that the star talent keeps coming through the grades and that the French and English realise that they have over inflated the player market. In terms of Unions paying the equivalent it simply is not possible at the moment. As an example top All Blacks are earning around 150,000 a year and can expect more with endorsements however can expect us much as 500,000 with a English or French club.

It is expected that many young rugby players that have dreamed about All Black Jersey will be lured to England and France before they even reach an international level. However even with this said the All Blacks should continue to be one of the most competitive rugby teams in the world.

Notable former Saracens players include Kyran Bracken, Dan Luger and Jason Leonard who all represented England. Other foreign stars who turned out for Saracens include, Phillipe Sella, Micheal Lynagh, Abdelatif Benazzi, Shane Byrne and Tim Horan.

The Saracens rugby shirts are all black (hence the nickname) with red trim and the away shirts are white with black stripes which are both long standing traditional kits.

Hopefully for the dedicated group of Saracens supporters, the team will eventually realise their potential and pick up the silverware that the club so richly deserves.

Rugby Balls Equipment

The game of rugby has been played for many years. Initially the rugby equipment and rules were not set, and tended to differ between one game and the next. It wasn’t until 1845 until the first set of written rules are said to have been published, by three students from the Rugby School in Warwickshire, England. The game of rugby owes its name to this historical school, which is one of the oldest public schools in the country.

Modern rugby balls are very distinctive. They are easily recognisable due to their prolate spheroid shape with rounded ends and specific dimensions. As with other rugby equipment, this has not always been the case. Until the 1860s the ball was made from an inflated pig’s bladder inner tube encased in leather. The size and shape of these balls may well have varied according to the pigs bladder used; players from individual areas may also have requested differing proportions. The job of inflating a pig’s bladders was not one that many people wished to undertake. When the bladder was still damp and pliable a clay pipe would be inserted in order to allow a person to blow it up using lung power alone. The end of the bladder would then be tied and the whole thing cased in leather to help prevent the ball popping. These balls were often described as ‘plum’ shaped, rounder than those used today, but certainly not spherical.

Rugby BallMaybe it is not surprising that when an alternative to this method became available, it was welcomed enthusiastically. In the 1860s rubber inner tubes became available, as did brass hand pumps. This allowed for balls to be made into exact shapes easily, some were designed to be spherical, but the boys from Rugby School requested something very different. Due to the uniform size and shape of these rubber ‘bladders’, the leather pieces used to cover them could be made to specific designs too - the production of rugby balls was able to speed up.

Although rugby equipment had evolved a great deal, the initial rules surrounding balls were not introduced until around 1892. It was necessary for the ball to be hand stitched with no less than eight stitches per inch. The weight of the ball should have been from twelve - thirteen ounces, with a length of 11 - 11 inches. The circumference (width) was 25 - 26 inches, and the end on circumference 30 - 31 inches. In 1931 the ball width was reduced to 24 - 25 inches and the weight increased to 13 to 15 ounces. It is interesting to note how these differ to modern standards.

Today, ball standards and specifications vary between Rugby League and Rugby Union games. In the 1980s, the leather casing traditionally used has been replaced on the most part by synthetic materials. These are water proof and often have surfaces that aid grip. As a player of rugby, or as a fan, it is fascinating to see how the game has evolved over the years. Alongside the game, rugby equipment has also changed through time.

Rugby Boots

Rugby game has quickly developed into a competition that entails not only of skill and strength but also on speed. Due to this, players of this sport need good stability and support when it comes to shoes. Lightweight performance Rugby boots are needed by players to show good playing techniques. Rugby boots are the most important equipment used by players in the sport of Rugby. They may also be the most expensive.

Since Rugby is played during winter and/or during bad weather, rugby boots must be made for soft and wet surfaces. Rugby boots must also be designed to have enhanced grip that’s useful during extreme movements. The boots must provide good traction while being comfortable to ensure good control of the ball. Rugby shirts also need to be designed for any weather condition and must be comfortable enough for the rugby players.

Rugby boots are made for different skill levels. Other things to consider when shopping for rugby boots are the field and weather conditions. You may find rugby boots that suit your needs based on the position you play, the ground surface of the field you will play in, the toe and height of boots and the price. Below are several types of rugby boots available in the market.

Types of Rugby Boots:

Molded Rugby Boots

1.Molded - With its numerous long narrow cleats or blades, this is usually used on hard natural grounds. Pressure is distributed evenly for a more comfortable feel. These shoes are chosen for better traction and support while allowing players for better cutting than traditional shoes with round cleats.

Screw-In Rugby Boots

2.Screw-In - Light weight and are normally used on softer grounds. Back players usually use rugby boots with 6 cleats, 4 in the front and 2 in the heels while forward players have 8 cleats, 6 in the front and 2 in the heels. These shoes also have replaceable cleats that are easy and quick to change.

Slides Rugby Boots

3.Slides - Worn off the playing field and can also be worn with rugby socks, these shoes slows down the wear and tear of rugby shoes.

Kangaroo Leather Rugby Boots

4.Kangaroo Leather - Known for its soft but snug fit, this is considered the most exclusive upper preferred by the most committed and best players. It may not be the most durable though because of the soft leather.
Calf-Skin Leather Rugby Boots

5.Calf-Skin Leather - Form-fitting and provides comfort, this very good leather upper is also more durable than Kangaroo leather which are usually worn by the casual to not too serious players.

Synthetic Leather Rugby Boots

6.Synthetic Leather - This is considered the most durable upper due to its moisture resistant feature. Also the most affordable and the lightest chosen by entry level players.

When it comes to sizing, rugby boots are lik e regular shoes. When you’re a size 9 in normal everyday shoes, you’ll also need the same size when ordering your rugby boots. However, rugby boots are wider that sneakers to allow better fit and comfort. The leather will stretch to conform to the shape of the foot of individual players. A snug fit is very important so as not to feel any discomfort or pressure. When trying on rugby boots, make sure that the toes reach all the way to the front of the boots while not touching the end providing for a ‘ to ‘ space.

Caring for rugby boots is very easy. Make sure to clean the boots after every wear. The boots must be dried out after the every game especially after playing during bad weather like rain. Leather food may be used on kangaroo and calf-skin leather so as to keep the leather supple and soft. This will also minimize water retention in your rugby boots.

The Most Strength-oriented Code Of Football Is Rugby

Rugby players spend considerably more playing time in physical contact and contest with opponents than players in other forms of football.

Rugby PlayersMuch of this contact involves extended grappling and wrestling, but what is also characteristic of rugby is the amount of time spent attempting to drive forward under loads considerably heavier than bodyweight. Obviously this is so in the scrum and maul, but also at the tackle. Both ball-carrier and tackler may strive to drive one another backward for an extended time after engagement. American football and rugby league are also primarily collision sports, but their tackles tend to terminate much more quickly.

Recognition of the importance of physical strength has led to a tendency for rugby selectors to favour increasingly heavier players even for backline positions. A modern professional rugby team is likely to average over 100kg bodyweight, compared with less than 95kg and less than 90kg for rugby league and Australian football respectively. Increased bodyweight appears to confer no advantage in soccer.

No valid size comparison can be made with players in American football. Its use of specialist teams means that individual players are only on the field for limited periods and therefore really massive players can be employed for the more static areas of engagement.

For professional rugby, players are often chosen on the basis of their size and apparent strength but are then not really expected to work to become significantly stronger. Much strength training in rugby appears to have the aim of generating hypertrophy - increasing muscle size and thus body mass - or of maintaining strength levels rather than seriously exploring the potential for markedly increased power.

Soccer, Australian football and rugby league are continuous-flow type games, whereas rugby and, to a much greater extent, American football are characterised by frequent stoppages and thus require lower levels of aerobic fitness. But I see little evidence that rugby coaches have fully realised the potential this provides to gain a competitive edge by requiring their players, backs and forwards, to seriously train for strength.

I would suggest that, given the development of very well-drilled coordinated defensive lines, the next stage in the evolution of rugby is likely to involve a concentration on the identification of and development of heavy, very mobile players who possess very high-range explosive strength.
